  • Skin Care Regimen

I had to renew my passport and now they let you take your own picture. While this seems like a good thing, it’s a little harder than it sounds. You can’t just take a selfie and be done with it. The background has to be of a certain off-white hue, you can’t be smiling (or frowning) and it should be a quality shot of yourself.

So I found an empty wall and fortunately had a roll of white vapor barrier that I hung behind me, had to bring in the ladder to attached the lights to so I had proper lighting and pulled out the tripod to hold the camera, lined it all up with my watch remote and took pictures. The results horrified me. I mean I look at myself in the mirror everyday but what I was getting in the pictures was a much harsher reality than I was ready for. I had a turkey neck, was pale and looked more like a proof of death picture than anything else. Hell my drivers license was much more flattering if that says anything.

So where I’m going with this is I charged my wife with setting me up with something to keep my skin from looking like leather. The results were an in shower face cleanser and an after shower skin moisturizer and another for the face and neck. While I cannot stop the effects of aging, I can help soften them. This is why the ladies look nice well into their later years while the fellows look like leather neck.

  • 500th Post

Started moving the server content. Hopefully tomorrow I’ll be writing this on the new server. It’s mostly the default web server but I’m not 100% sure what to do about the certificates but I think if I move them over I should be fine although I’ll still need to install certbot on the new box to handle the certs there.

This also happens to be my 500th post on this blog. So happy 500! The first person reaching out to me to congratulate me on the event gets a $25 Best Buy gift card.

  • Closed at 7am on a Sunday

I guess it happened during covid that anything that was open 24 hours wasn’t open 24 hours and hours were scaled back since then. I ran into the issue maybe last year, I had to get some band aids or something at 3am and that was never a problem as there was a Walgreens and CVS diagonal from each other just down the road. Nope, both closed. The 24 hour Walmart super center is no longer 24 hours. And evidently the home improvement stores aren’t open until 8am on a Sunday. Jackasses used to have a Home Depot that was open 24 hours and now they can’t even open until 8am. What is the point of living in a city of 8 million people if you can’t even find a hardware store open at 7am on a Sunday? I’d be really bent out of shape except there was no traffic on the roads, probably because there’s nothing open to go to…

  • New Battery for the Truck

Everybody wants a truck until it’s time to do truck maintenance. Aside from the 3 gallon oil changes, this thing also has not one but two car batteries. Meaning that once every four years you not only have to replace one battery, you get to replace two…

I used to just go to Autozone but they fell out of favor years ago. Then I was enamored with the Sam’s club but I think that I’ve come around to the Walmart brand 4 year. It was $400 but I’m good for the next 4 years with something like 850 cold cranking amps. Just for giggles, here is the OEM info on the batteries.

    2021 Ram Laramie 6.7l Battery
    OEM Size: 94R/H7
    OEM CCA: 730

The EverStart Platinum AGM Automotive Battery, Group Size H7 / LN4 / 94R 12 Volt, 850 CCA 140 RC is currently running at $179.84.

  • Truck Battery Replacement

The truck had died on me a couple of times and it took forever to charge it. It had the original batteries so it was time to get new ones. Yes I had to get two. Walmart had these for $179.84 and they have a 4 year warranty. It was a mostly uneventful process but the passenger side battery was a pain in the ass because you had to remove the air intake hose which means you have to take apart the air filter housing and its 5 or 6 bolts. But I got a chance to check the air filter, just a bunch of flies and bees. Also, the passenger side batter seems to have been leaking acid, I tried to remove the battery holder but no go, had to use paper towels to sop it up. At least it was a visual indication that the battery was bad. The other thing was the bolt that holds the battery down is gone, I unscrewed up but couldn’t get my hand down to get it so I just pulled the battery and I heard it hit something but it didn’t fall through and I wasn’t able to locate it. I drove it after I put it back together and then went back with the bike to see if I couldn’t find it. I’ll need to find another one…

Other than that it was a cold morning but turned into a nice day. Lots of football on but nothing really worth watching. We had shrimp, zucchini and pasta for dinner. It’s one of those meal kits. This one wasn’t that bad but I’m not happy with them in general. Oh well, I’m thankful I have food and a roof over my head.

  • Server/Services On The Move…

I’ve been on the fence about moving things over. I’m questioning having a native database and such on the server to host my main blog and photos. But that’s what I want and the rest of the services will be docker/podman. To which I’m really thinking I want to use docker even though podman is default for RHEL. I know they’re supposed to be the same aside from security isolation but docker just seams to be the industry standard.

In any case, we’re going to start the move in earnest to the new old server so if there’s times when the site is down it may be from the move, I doubt it will be picked up on the news wires:)

  • Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving was a success. There were 10 in attendance and it went great. I brought the grill over so we didn’t have to take up any room to get the ribs heated and everyone liked the cheesecake too. Sandy did carrots and they were good also, we had the turkey and there was a vegan offering for those who didn’t imbibe in animal flesh. We got home and caught the last of the Cowboy’s game and they won again! Although they were playing the New York Football Giants who are the worst team in our division. While still mathematically alive, there isn’t really an actual chance. No surprise, we knew this.

I talked with Ron and he said that Jim has vacated the building and that he’s ready to set up an RV site for me on the property there on Peach St. I’m kind of excited about that even though I think they got 2 feet of snow overnight. When I lived up there that was par for the course for the winter months. With the warming, not so much. I’m conflicted because it’s ridiculous to try to cool your environment all the time because AC will kill you but how well do I function in the cold? The point is moot for the time being, we’d just be summering there.

I’m thankful for life, it’s rough and not for the faint of heart but it beats the alternative.

  • Ribs Smoked

Started cooking the ribs today at 11:15am and took them off at 5:15pm, they were seriously good eats. We did the 4 racks, ate half for dinner, will take a rack and a half over to dinner tomorrow night and 2 racks have been vacuum sealed and frozen.

I’ve also decided that we’re going to try smoking turkey breasts. To this point I’ve only ever done beef and pork, time to do some bird. I really like the idea of getting a 2 pound breast and smoking it and slicing it really thin for low processed lunch meat.

It was a beautiful day to do the smoking. This will be the last day for a while but it is like late fall meaning it’ll be nice and chilly tomorrow for the Thanksgiving holiday which is the way it should be in my humble but honest opinion.

  • Rib Rub Recipe

This is the rib rub recipe that I deviate greatly from when I’m getting ready to cook up some ribs.

    8 tablespoons light brown sugar
    3 tablespoons kosher salt
    1 tablespoon chili powder
    1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
    1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
    1/2 teaspoon jalapeno seasoning
    1/2 teaspoon Old Bay Seasoning
    1/2 teaspoon rubbed thyme
    1/2 teaspoon onion powder

  • Ribs Rubbed & Ghee Made

Since I’m doing the ribs tomorrow, I had to get them rubbed. So 4 racks of ribs are sitting in the fridge all rubbed up and we’re out of kosher salt. I’m excite about the plan to smoke up all the ribs and then taking half racks and vacuum sealing and freezing them. I figure we’re eating half a rack tomorrow, one rack to sisters meaning 5 half racks for the freezer. We’ll see how it goes but Billy Martin said it should be fine.

Also made some Ghee today, I only got half a jar from a pound of butter, I thought it was more and I thought that it was easier to strain the product with coffee filters, but its still good. With the advent of the cast iron usage the ghee is pretty important as it’s the best possible oil for that.

Made it to the gym and took the truck, I need new batteries for it. It lasts longer between maintenance but maintenance is more expensive.
