  • First 5k in years!

Ok, well, not really. I’m sure Sandy and I have hiked way over 3.1 miles at once in our adventures. But this was the first time in well over 3 decades that I actually set out with the goal to walk a 5k. I went to the rec center and walked 39 laps on the indoor track for a total of 3.1 miles in 56 minutes and 6 seconds…

Ok, that’s slightly off my best time of 18 minutes and 20 seconds but I’m somewhere around 3 times as old as I was then. This is still progress. A scant couple of years ago, I don’t know that I could have made it the 39 laps. That and my time can only get better, LOL. The sad truth is that my ankles were never really meant to be a runner and as I’ve gotten older I just don’t feel like taxing them to see how fast I can go. I’ve very satisfied that they just go:)

  • Last Meal Menu

I have always been interested in the last meal protocol for death row inmates. To pick a last meal knowing it will be the last food you ever have before death has to be a hard choice. So when I do run across this in the media I like to document it and with that, I finally found something that Twitter could be useful for. Welcome to @LastMealMenu on Twitter. For those times I run across something of this nature in the news I have someplace to put it.

  • Church Today

It was nice hanging out with Adrian last night and I figured I’d go to church and put in a good word for Sandy and her dad. I saw Charlie, Hanna, Michelle, Richard, Tom, and a multitude of other acquaintances. Something called Pentecost was today, not sure what it is but they celebrated the first gathering to worship of First Christian Church, which was 6/5/1855. 167 years ago. That’s a lot of years and a lot of souls.

I said a lot of prayers while I was there, and while I didn’t feel a huge sense of relief and was antsy by the time it was all over with, it was worth it just to get out of the house.

  • Memorial Day – 2022

First of all, hat’s off and hand over heart to those that gave the ultimate sacrifice for their country. I tried to get into the military but I guess the higher power had different plans for me. Today I celebrated by finishing up the front lawn and then doing work and school, taking a nap, finishing up work, and then school again. Not really a great way to celebrate but it will be the last Memorial Day ever where I don’t have a degree…

  • No Sunday Angst today

Easy not to have Sunday Angst when Monday is a holiday! Not much going on today, finished off bundling the tree limbs for trash day and raking the front strip of grass in the front. I literally raked out 100 pounds of leaves and other debris from there, and another 200 from the beds and front yard. Crazyness.

I had always thought that just mowing in the leaves and such create mulch but I guess in the heat with no real rain, it just petrifies.

  • Solo Saturday

Sandy took off for Erie today, leaving me to my own devices for a week. So far so good, I got up and kissed her goodbye, fixed the TV antenna on the roof, went and had a 20lb tank filled, and put the new sticker on the truck. Went to Walmart for supplies to restring the flag pole and a 12-pack of Red Bull. Trimmed the tree around the flags waving path. Managed to get three bundles put together of the trimmings ready for pickup. And I’ve logged 7724 steps all before noon:)

Now it’s getting too hot to be outside so I’m inside and will grab a shower and hit the books. It’s hard to believe I’m just hanging with the cats for the long weekend. Oh well, this will be the last memorial day of my life without a bachelor’s degree. Life is good today!

  • Statistics

I don’t ever want to play the part

Of a statistic on a government chart

    The Police -1981

Tough luck, you are a statistic on a government chart, just hope you’re in the upper part of it.

I’m taking a statistics class and my eyes are crossing. If your selling point to get people to acquire knowledge is that you will now have a better idea of the probability of heads vs tails of 10 coins being flipped 5 times you really need a better point.

And then what’s with this Bayes Rule and its comparison to cancer and false vs positive tests. I mean we’re dealing with something so abstract why bring a deadly disease into it? You want my attention? Start showing me how this relates to something I wouldn’t mind running across, like Vegas gambling odds on various games or how to handicap the ponies given their previous record damnit, something I may actually give a flying flip about…

  • If pirates wrote code, what language would it be? Rrrrr

We’ve discovered that you can, by following some really archaic directions, use R in Jupyter Notebooks. So the next step of my educational journey seems to consist of the R programming language which is done (not surprisingly) in R-Studio.

As I work through the micro degree on my way to the full size one, I’m having to learn R-language, and I must say I’m impressed with how easy it is to pick up and the things you can do from a graphing capability. It’s just 2 credits worth of class but a neat little language

  • Mass Shooting – Uvalde, TX

So as I was going through my day the news started to filter through. School shooting, lockdown, 2 dead, gunman arrested. It barely registered because there were only two after all, tragic as a school shooting is it’s hardly news anymore.

The next I hear there are multiple fatalities and the gunman isn’t in custody… Uh oh, if they’re having trouble nailing down the number dead and where the gunman is, it ain’t over. Sadly that would be correct and after it was all said and done, 19 innocent children and two teachers were gunned down with an AR rifle. I can’t even begin to imagine.

We have to act, something has to happen. We can’t let this continue. As a gun owner let’s start the concessions. You have to have a license to own a gun. Absolutely god damn right. You have a license to drive a car, you have to show that you know the rules of using that car and you have to prove you’re physically and mentally able to drive. Same with a gun, prove you know how to use it and are of a sane mind and physically able to have it. No gun ownership until 25. Exceptions are made for our military who are trained and cleared for ownership.

This is not the state or country that I care to be associated with. We’re forcing women to have kids who are fodder for the nut cases that can buy a gun because that’s our right as Americans. Disgraceful and we must do better.

  • More Excercise

As we celebrate another week in the books, I’m excited to say we’ve been doing a great job of moving for at least 30 minutes a day. Today we walked outside but even in the morning, it’s starting to get hot.
One of the really nice things about the rec center is that the walking course on the second floor is cool, I mean to the point where some folks have to wear sweaters for their walk. I think it feels great and if you get a card you can grab some weights and work out your arms while you walk. I have to be a bit careful with that as I overdid it yesterday and I think I bruised a bicep, ouch!
We’re also going to try racquetball sometime as no one is ever on the courts.
