  • Movie – Private Benjamin (1980)

I did enjoy this movie when I was a kid and we’ve had it on Plex forever and I wanted to get Sandy’s take on it. It’s still an amusing little show and it is empowering for women but it does kind of leave you hanging in the end and doesn’t really come to a conclusion. It’s kind of funny but this is one that kind of screams out for a remake or reboot but we’re pretty sure that just isn’t going to happen.

  • Watched – Firestarter (2022)

I’m not usually a fan of remakes, and this movie makes me remember why.

I fondly remember the 1984 movie with Drew Barrymore, it was (I guess) a little more believable or maybe it’s because I was 12 and Drew’s character of Charlie was really cute. That movie seemed to flow right, you sympathized with the main character. This one not so much, after she torches her mom and a cat and leaves one of the antagonists intact it’s hard to be a big fan. In the end, the character disappoints on almost every front.

Nothing against any of the actors, the acting was adequate, it’s just when you try to rehash a story that’s been played you get a tired, unrefreshing hour and thirty-six minute waste of time. 1.8 out of 5 and I’m being generous.

  • Watched – Alita: Battle Angel

I wasn’t really sure when I saw this initially but the trailer pulled me in. It’s a really cute movie with the doe-eyed protagonist one of those you really enjoy cheering for and feeling the lows with her too. The ending is wide open for a sequel and it would make an absolutely fantastic series but this article seems to cast doubt on a restriction of the story on the big screen. I’ll be rooting for the sequel and will rake this as 4.3 out of 5, well worth your time!

  • Watched – Moonfall

Halle Barry is the known element of this 2022 sci-fi/action flick. It’s a bit out there but it makes for a decent movie. The premise is that the moon has fallen out of its orbit and it’s jacking things up on Earth in a pretty bad way. So lots of special effects to see the world getting almost blown apart and the moon a creation of crazy origins. In a world of some really bad movies this one is watchable and entertaining. 3.5 out of 5.

  • No Time To Die

The latest installment of the James Bond series is a 2 hr 43 min story that does its best to keep us enthralled but is a bit of a bore in my honest opinion. It’s too long and jumps around too much to keep on target. But in usual Bond fashion, there are neat chases and gadgets and scenery to give you something to watch as the story labors along. Never really felt Daniel Craig as James Bond but the ending would seem to indicate this is his last stint as 007.

All told I’ll give it a 7 out of 10 stars.

  • Watched – Cruella

I wasn’t thrilled that the movie was 2 hours and 14 minutes. My ADHD kicks in after 2 hours. But this movie was great! Well acted, super plot that twists wonderfully and a soundtrack that is amazing. Could definitely watch again! 4.5 out of 5 stars, well worth your time.

  • Watched – Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead

I like this movie, released in 2007 with Phillip Hoffman and Ethan Hawke. Drama about two sons who plot the robbery of their parents jewelry store. Everything goes horribly, horribly wrong. Extremely well acted with a twisting plot that keeps things interesting, Well worth seeing, I’m giving it a 4 out of 5.

  • Watched – Nobody

This is probably the feel good movie of the year. A light hearted John Wick crosses RED you will. Bob Odenkirk plays Hutch Mansell, retired three letter agency guy who, despite having left the job behind, still can’t leave the life. It’s a little slow to get going but picks up steam fairly quickly. Great performance by the consummate actor Christopher Lloyd as Hutch’s dad. All told much better than any of it’s contemporaries out today and I’ll give it 4.25 out of 5. Would definitely recommend.

  • Watched – Prometheus

Since I was a kid an curled up on the couch with dad watching Alien I’ve always loved the series, well mostly loved the series. Okay, I really liked the beginning of the series (read: first two movies) it seemed to go downhill from there. In this prequel we see a journey to find the alien ‘engineers’ in the 2090’s based on maps found in ancient earth caves throughout the world. A bit hard to swallow but okay.

Then they get there and decide to go exploring first thing, I was a bit shocked at how easily these folks remove their helmets, but they do. A storm comes, people get separated and general carnage ensues. While it sort of may look like a setup to Aliens there seems to be something missing, it doesn’t seem to set it up correctly. And I find the Fassbender extremely annoying but maybe that’s me. I’ll give it 2.5 out of 5 because I’m feeling generous.

  • Watched – Jakob’s Wife

I’m pretty good at picking some off the wall movies, or maybe that’s just what’s out there these days. This is an odd thriller/horror movie that has a new twist on vampires and the occult, this time the possessed is a preachers wife. Let the hilarity (or gore in this case) ensue. It’s not entirely terrible but you still walk away from it with the thought that you could have spent the last hour and thirty eight minutes in a better way. 2 out of 5.
